Smith Captures Wild Sprint Feature at Creek County Speedway
Story by John Rittenoure
KELLYVILLE, Oklahoma (September 5, 2009) - Danny Smith survived an incident with rookie Michael Tyre II then passed his stepson for the lead to win a wild sprint car A feature Saturday night at Creek County Speedway.
Kyle Clark raced off the front row with the lead followed by fellow rookie Tyre. The two stayed out front until lap five when Tyre flipped in turn four to bring out the red. Smith drove under Tyre for second in turn four and took the position away. Tyre's left front touched the rear of Smith's sprinter sending the rookie end over end. Fortunately Tyre was not hurt.
Clark resumed with the lead on the restart but Smith quickly got past only led a lap before the red waved again, this time for Clark who flipped in turn three. Clark also escaped unhurt.
Smith drove back out front on the restart and raced unchallenged to win his second feature of the season. Keith Bolton raced into second after the lap eight restart and gained some ground on Smith in lapped traffic. Brent Bates passed Waylon Weaver for third on lap 12. His third place finish was good enough to take away the points lead from Ricky York who only finished 12th in the 20-lapper.
Dean Ends Drought With Modified Victory
Ho Dean ended an eleven week drought with his win in the modified A feature. Dean, who won last on June 7th, led the final six laps to win by a narrow margin over Justin Green.
Jason Redman jumped into an early lead looking for a second straight win with Green driving into second on lap four. On lap eight the race went red when Nick Henson turned over in turn one. As racing resumed Redman continued out front with Dean charging into second. On lap 15 Dean briefly challenged but Redman held on until lap 16 when Redman pulled to a stop at the top of turn two. Dean inherited the lead and Green followed in second. Green remained close but Dean held on for his fourth win of the season.
Lee Wins First Super Stock Feature
Stacy Lee raced to his first super stock victory. Lee drove around leader Donnie Wright in turn four of lap 15 and held on until the yellow waved with two laps remaining. Lee continued to lead after the restart to win over Carl Lewis and Wright.
Wright was the early leader jumping into a quick lead over Brian Rostron. Lewis challenged Rostron on lap 10 and took over second a lap later. A three car battle ensued as Lewis passed Lee for second on lap 13. But Lee wheeled back around Lewis to retake second on his way to the lead.
Stucks Returns To Winners Circle
Michael Stucks returned to the winners circle for the fifth time this season in the mini stock division. After two lap one yellows Larry Fisher moved out front but it only lasted one lap. Stucks roared into the lead and went the distance. Danny Ray passed Fisher for second on lap three and closed in on Stucks after the halfway point. But Ray could not mount a challenge and settled for second. Kenny Grumadas wheeled into third on lap 11 but could not close on Ray.
Newcomer Freeman Wins Pure Stock Main in Second Night Out
Steve Freeman only needed two weeks to record his first pure stock victory. Driving in his second race of the season, Freeman grabbed the lead on lap three and drove to victory in the 20-lap feature.
Tyler Roberts led the opening lap with Freeman pulling alongside on lap two. Freeman pulled ahead on lap three and stayed there as Roberts stayed close. After a lap 13 restart Dustin Hearn passed Roberts for second and eventually closed up behind Freeman. On the final lap Hearn bobbled and glanced into the turn two wall allowing Roberts to go back by. Hearn recovered to finish third.
Barnes Battles to 12th FWD Victory
Eric Barnes battled past Toby Cooper to win his 12th front wheel drive A feature.
Jeff Record led the first three laps finally giving waty to Cooper. Barnes followed into second and challenged Cooper on lap six. Barnes roared into the lead on lap seven but nearly lost control. Barnes held on and raced to victory. Kimberly Bishop passed Record on lap 12 to finish third.
